My father has always had a wood shop in the basement... or at least as long as I can remember. I'm just the kind of creative geek that would latch on to that kind of opportunity. I've taken a couple of wood shop classes, but most of what I know, I learned from my father. Would that all the kids in my classes could be as lucky to have such a great teacher. Anyway, here are some of my woodworking projects, finished, unfinished, and plans. Enjoy.

Coffee Table Sketch     This is a sketch of a coffee table design that I made. I intend to make this someday. The top of the table is glass and lifts up so that the decorations under the glass can be changed periodically. For instance: dried leaves and twigs for autumn, pressed flowers for spring. The lower section has a long, shallow drawer on each side and a narrow, deep drawer on each end. The corners are turned and then hand carved. Each of the sides and drawer fronts are also carved. Finished January 1998. Back to Top

Dragon Doors     When I lived above the King & I Restaurant with Stef, Jim, and Tobi. Since it was a loft apartment, in order to give us some privacy I built these doors to separate the areas. They were made out of simple pine with a light oil finish. The doors themselves were 2x4's with double panes of glass separated by handmade rice paper. They were unbelievably heavy and I had to hang them with a garage door track and wheels. I was originally going to put a piece of rice paper between the two sections at the top (yes I hand carved that TWICE) but in the end decided that it would be too delicate. It looked quite good as it was and I didn't think that the rice paper would add that much to it. You can see a copy of the original drawing that I used for the top here or in my design section. I no longer have the doors as I gave them away when I moved out. Finished March 1997. Back to Top

Mushroom lamp     This was a project for 4-H. I'd always loved turning wood, so I decided to make a lamp. I used walnut and rock birch for wildly contrasting colors. The base makes an interesting mushroom shape because of the contrasting wood. I won a blue at the Walworth County Fair... did not manage to make best overall, though. Finished August 1990.
