I'd wanted to try this style of design for some time. It's a mixture of clip art and photo editing. The background designs of these labels at first look strangely messy, yet inviting. Then you notice the patterns that put organization to the chaos. Finally, looking very closely, you notice clumps of spinach, patterns of carrots, celery stalks... small clues to the product that the label is selling.

You'll notice that the "Maid" mascot and the "From Gramma's Kitchen" are downplayed in these designs. It was our goal to make them subtle enough that the consumer would make the connection, but the stores wouldn't balk at us having our name on the product (as is often the case.)

It bears mentioning that Jim Schweitzer, my assistant at Country Maid, had a hand in many of these designs. The backgrounds for Tropical, Olive, Sundried, French and Southwestern are all him. As with most assistants, the boss has to step in and do some editing, but the Olive Dip label was left largely untouched.
